Doctor Albert Karvonen

It is with great pride we announce Albert Karvonen’s Honourary Doctorate of Science degree, a distinction he received from the Athabasca University in June 2007. His award was given in recognition of his over 50 years as an educator and conservationist in Alberta, first as a schoolteacher and then as a wildlife filmmaker.  Congratulations Dr. Karvonen on this landmark achievement!

Karvonen Takes Home a Rosie!

Congratulations to our incredibly talented colleague Janice Ryan for her win at the 2006 Alberta Film and Television Awards. Janice was beaming as she accepted the award for Best Narrator (Circumpolar Bears) and exclaimed, "This one's for the bears!"

Broadcast Dates for Circumpolar Bears and Wolves of Labrador!

Our two newest one hour specials are nearing completion and will be airing this summer on Discovery Channel Canada. Circumpolar Bears will be airing Friday, July 29th, 2005 and Wolves of Labrador will be playing Thursday, August 18th, 2005. Check www.discoverychannel.ca nearer to the dates for exact times. Shortly after broadcast, both programs will be available on VHS and DVD. Be sure to watch!

1st Place!


The International Cultural Film Symposium was held in Missoula Montana September 9-12 and our submission Heiltsuk: Search for the Wolves placed first in the professional short category. This is Heiltsuk's second award recognition for cultural value.


Broadcast Dates for Discovering Wildness

The first broadcast of Karvonen Films’ latest 13-part series Discovering Wildness begins Friday June 4 at 5:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) on the Discovery Channel. This award winning series takes the viewer across Canada from sea to sea, capturing the lives of both well-loved and little-known species. The series runs until August 6.

Honorable Mentions go to Karvonen Films

The 27th Annual International Wildlife Film Festival results are in and Karvonen Films has received two honorable mentions for its work. An Honorable Mention for Educational Value goes to Mountain Sheep: life on the edge, and an Honorable Mention for Cultural Education goes to Heiltsuk: search for the wolves. Both films are from the Discovering Wildness series.

And the Rosie goes to…

Congratulations to Doug Steele and Sandra Tober who each walked away with a Rosie from the 2004 Alberta Film and Television Awards held in Edmonton, April 24. Doug won Best Cinematography Non-Dramatic for his work in Seadogs and Toothwalkers while Sandra won Best Script Non-Dramatic for Mountain Sheep: life on the edge. Congratulations also to Albert Karvonen, Darcie Grace and Michelle Macdonald for their nominations.

The Alberta Film and Television Awards are held each year to celebrate the best the Alberta film and television industry has to offer.

Karvonen Films receives 5 nominations

The 2004 Alberta Film and Television Awards nominations are out!

Karvonen Films is proud to announce the 5 nominations it has received for the 2004 Alberta Film and Television Awards, which will take place April 24 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Discovering Wildness, KF’s recently completed series, received a nomination for Best Documentary/Reality Series. Three films within that series received individual craft nominations: Albert Karvonen and Darcie Grace received nominations for Best Cinematographer, Non-Dramatic (under 30 minutes) for Cavity Nesters: life in a tree. Doug Steele received a nomination in the same category for his role as cinematographer for Seadogs and Toothwalkers. Michele Macdonald received a nomination for Best Script, non-dramatic (under 30 minutes) for Seadogs and Toothwalkers, and Sandra Tober has also received a nomination in the Best Script category for Mountain Sheep: life on the edge.

Mountain Sheep Film a Finalist at Trento

Mountain Sheep: life on the edge, a film from KF’s Discovering Wildness series, is a finalist at the Trento Mountain Film Festival in Trento, Italy. The film will be screened May 5 at the festival, which takes place May 2–9.
